TRC News 16 September 2010

Dear Members

Important Survey

As a club, we face some important decisions in the future and the Committee would like the views of the members on these key topics. We have developed a short survey that we would like ALL members to complete. It should take no more than 5 minutes and will provide vital information on how YOU want us to take the club forwards. Please could you take the time to complete the survey, by selecting the link below, as soon as possible and no later than the end of September.

Training

Training as usual this Sunday morning at 9.30.

I must warn all NEW members who have not yet handed in a signed waiver to the Operations Tent that your child will not be allowed to continue to train if you do not hand in the forms this weekend. Also, if you have not yet bought kit for your children then please do so. We are happy for new joiners to play in other kit for 2-3 weeks to ensure that they are settled in and enjoying themselves before you invest in kit but thereafter they should be training in TRC kit – this facilitates selection of teams in training and gives the children a rugby identity!

We have invested in some extensive remedial work on the pitches and you will have noticed last Sunday that a lot of sand has been laid on the playing surface to improve the drainage. More sand was laid earlier this week so we may find the playing surface deteriorates slightly in the short term but are hopeful this will yield long term gains. The Operations Tent will have a much needed facelift next week. Thanks to Mark Fielding for co-ordinating this.

TRC News 31 August 2010

Dear Members

Well, almost every first training session back that I can remember has been impacted by rain and last Sunday was not going to be the exception but we were able to train.

Training in the Rain

Particularly for the benefit of our new members, we train during the rain! The exceptions to this are when the pitches are too water logged or there is a presence of lightning. Whilst I appreciate that some of you set off early to reach training, it is not practical to be able to communicate a firm decision too early. I usually arrive at Turf City around 9am and if training is definitely going to be cancelled then I will cascade this message to head coaches for onward communication with you. Usually, there is a chance that the rain will either pass or will not waterlog the pitches so we try and avoid early decisions as there have been many occasions where torrential rain and lightning at 8.30 has been followed by beautiful sunshine by 9.30 – this is Singapore weather. I can only recall cancelling a couple of sessions in the last 2-3 years but if we had reacted earlier we would have cancelled many more. Going forwards we will be looking at ways to issue more direct communication to you.

Pitch Maintenance and Litter

We will be embarking on some serious sand laying on the fields so there may be a temporary deterioration but hopefully we will reap the benefits going forwards. We will also be making the Operations tent more level, laying gravel under it and replacing the canopy so this area should be much more practical in the next week or two – it was a mud bath last week. Please bear with us while we expedite these works.

You can help by ensuring that you do not leave litter on the fields and pick up litter that you see lying around. A small and familiar group of people work tirelessly to set up and clear away at training and it is disappointing to see large amounts of litter that has been discarded by our members. We all need to help with this.

Registration

A reminder to all new members to submit the signed waiver to the Operations Tent next week if you have not already done so. After a couple of weeks, if no signed waiver has been received we will not allow your child to train so please help the coaches by complying with this.

Legends Shirts

Due to the rain, I was unable to circulate these shirts to the contact age groups last Sunday and will do so in 2 weeks time (I am away this weekend).

Tour to HK

A reminder to all parents to ensure that you respond promptly to your coaches regarding this tour with any information or payment that they request.

I would also remind parents that this tour is targeted to be a squad tour for children and coaches, which is slightly different to our family tours to KL. Whilst parents and siblings are welcome to travel to HK and support, we would prefer the children to be together in the same hotel with their coaches. If they are staying elsewhere with you then they will miss out on the experience of touring together as a team.

Best Regards

Phillip

TRC News 28 August 2010

Dear Members

For those who have registered in the last couple of weeks, please find attached my earlier email that set out a lot of background about the coming months.

Training resumes tomorrow for all age groups at 9.30am at Turf City.

I am delighted to inform you that what were previously referred to as the ISA fields are now the TRC fields! With effect from 1 September, we rent the fields, which gives us some certainty for the next 12 months in terms of access to pitches to play on. A huge thanks to the people who have worked hard to secure these pitches and get arrangements in place for maintenance, branding, bookings etc. including Neil Waghorne, Ian Gibbs, Ashley Wright, Andy Williams, Mark Fielding, Brett Cameron and Ghislaine Taylor.

We are still renting the Anza pitches so training will be in the same places for each age group as it was before June. We are currently evaluating the possibility of staggering training on Sunday mornings and will make a decision on this in the coming weeks, depending on how many third party bookings we take. Anybody interested in renting the pitches should contact Andy Williams for more information - andrew.w.williams9@gmail.com.

We will have our own storage shed on the pitches and will be moving the Operations Tent to the TRC fields with effect from tomorrow as it will be positioned next to the shed. We have a lot of new kit and merchandise on sale tomorrow so I would recommend those of you who need kit before training to arrive early – the Operation Tent will be open early at 9am to try and reduce the queues.
1. Playing kit of all sizes;
2. TRC Rugby Balls – Sizes 3, 4, 5 and Touch - $30 each;
3. TRC Umbrellas and Caps; and
4. TRC Car Decals - $10 each, 2 for $15 or 3 for $20.

We have also been given over 200 free Canterbury training shirts with the Barclays and Chartis logos following the Legends Coaching clinic that was held a few months ago. The shirts were promised to those who attended but due to a delivery glitch they only arrived in the holidays. I will be liaising with each age group head coach for the distribution of these shirts to the U9 to U16 contact groups that took part.

I look forward to seeing you all at training tomorrow.

Best Regards

Phillip

TRC Season Resumes 17 August 2010

Dear Members

I hope you have enjoyed the long break, a chance for the children to recharge their batteries and also a few weeks of email silence from me!

Training Resumes

Training will officially resume at Turf City on Sundays starting on Sunday 29 August – one or two age groups may be starting this weekend with some pre-season fitness work but your age group head coaches will have communicated directly with you if this is the case. Same time, same place – 9.30 to 11.00 on the ISA and Anza fields.

For those who have registered over the summer, welcome to Tanglin Rugby Club. You have made the right choice and we look forward to welcoming you and your family to the TRC community. Please remember to bring along your signed registration forms (which should have been emailed to you when you registered online). Bring them over to the Operations Tent where we can direct you to the correct age groups.

On a more serious note, it became apparent towards the end of the last sessions in May and June that more and more parents have started to drop their children off at training and leave. I would remind all members that TRC is not a drop-off club and we pride ourselves on the degree of parental support and involvement in the running of the club. If you cannot stay with your child during training then you must ensure that a responsible adult is assigned to assist the coaches in the unlikely event of an injury and that you remain contactable at all times.

I would also take this opportunity to encourage any parents who would like to become more involved to step forwards and offer to help. The club is run by other parents who give up their time to provide the wonderful environment for the children to enjoy rugby and touch. Don’t be shy – please approach the head coaches, the operations tent or myself if you would like to become more involved.

A gentle reminder to renew any equipment that does not fit. All children playing contact rugby (U9 to U16 boys) must wear a mouth guard and I cannot stress enough the importance of a good fitting one. The coaches will not allow any child in these age groups to train without one so do not ask them to make exceptions. Please also make sure that studs/cleats are smooth and finger nails are trimmed! For newcomers – please ensure kids have plenty of fluids to drink and sun screen.

Dates For Your Diary

Please mark your diaries with the following events over the coming months:

29-31 October – Tour to Hong Kong – We are finalising details but currently expect to tour with most age groups from U7 to U13. The U8s are not touring as their HK counterparts will have already moved up to contact rugby and the U12s have decided to arrange a tour to HK the following weekend. This weekend coincides with the Bledisloe Cup game between Australia and The All Blacks and TRC has secured a block of tickets via the HK union. The U7 to U11 age groups are scheduled to enter the world’s largest ever mini rugby tournament that morning and we are arranging friendly games with HK clubs on Saturday for the older age groups and for all age groups on Sunday. More details will follow shortly but your coaches will soon expect you to confirm your child’s availability and pay deposits so please help them by responding promptly. Due to the difficulty in arranging enough flights and hotels we are unable to manage travel arrangements for parents and siblings who want to support. As soon as we have finalised flight and hotel details we will forward these for you to make direct bookings and families are welcome to join the tour. However, the children will also appreciate the independence of touring with their coaches and team mates and most are old enough to tour without parents (we have made extra allowance for the younger age groups).

5-7 and/or 12-14 November – We are currently finalising dates for the Saracens Coaching weekends when we will host Saracens Coaches for some special coaching sessions. More details to follow.

19 November – TRC Annual Dinner and Dance – Tanglin Club. Details will follow.

28 November – TRC Annual Awards and Family Fun Day after training.

4-5 December – Centaurs Polo Club Tournament and Cup of Nations.

Dates TBC - Clifford Chance Amazons Challenge

Dates TBC – Possible Girls Touch Tour

Barbarians Centre of Excellence (BCE) – applies to U8 to U14 age groups

Tom Browne’s BCE BaaBaas program begins another season very soon – see attached flyer – with trials on this Wednesday for U11s at UWC. You must decide individually if your child has the skills and will benefit from trying out for the program but I am sure your age group head coaches will be willing to offer advice. Many of our members have benefited greatly from this extra coaching in a different environment and have enjoyed the past tours to HK and Australia, where BCE teams remain unbeaten against top quality club and school opposition.

I understand that Tom has changed the age cut-off dates to 30 September (see below for explanation) so there could be a spread of 3 different TRC age groups playing in a BCE age group. If your child is smaller or less developed then I would recommend that you discuss this with BCE directly if you are concerned.

BCE U9 = TRC U8 and U9 (born after 30 September)
BCE U11 = TRC U9 (born before 30 September), U10 and U11 (born after 30 September)
BCE U13 = TRC U11 (born before 30 September), U12 and U13 (born after 30 September)
BCE U14 = TRC U13 (born before 30 September) and U14 (born after 30 September)

TRC Kit and Rugby Balls

We have received deliveries of kit and other merchandise including TRC branded rugby balls, which ran out quickly earlier in the year. As the first day of training will be busy, please arrive early if you need to buy kit for your child before training. The Operations Tent will be open early at 9.00 so come early to avoid the long queues.

TRC Committee Meeting (Open to All)

As there is a lot to plan, there will be a committee meeting next Monday at Brewerkz (Riverside Point) starting promptly at 7pm. These meetings are open to all members who would like to contribute. No need to respond – just come along.

TRC Adult Touch Team

The Touch Football Singapore Winter Touch League starts on Saturday 28 August and will run for around 9 weeks. TRC Intencity has been entered and is looking for more parents who would like to play some touch. Players of all abilities and fitness levels, male and female, are welcome to join us. It’s a great way to burn off the excesses of the week, make new friends and some even stay for a few beers afterwards!

If you are interested then please email Aidan Doyle at doyles@singnet.com.sg.

I look forward to seeing you all at training if not on Thursday evening.

Best Regards

Phillip
